Serve on a Board Effectively

The OnBoard Fellowship equips students with the skills to effectively serve their communities on a school board.

Led by staff with experience as student board members, the workshop passes on best practices and allows students to better understand their role and responsibility. This fellowship runs over the course of the entire academic year to provide lasting support, access to resources, and in-depth training.

You’ll join a peer network of other Student Board Members who are raising their voices on behalf of students in their communities.

Curriculum

Key areas of instruction

In addition to training Fellows in core CASC topics such as leadership values and ethics, OnBoard curriculum includes policies and governance training specific to Student Board Member needs:

The roles, responsibilities, and powers of Student Board Members
Education funding methods, Local Control and Accountability Plans, and Local Control Funding Formulas
The Student Bill of Rights
Media use and literacy
Surveying student opinion: methods to gain a wider perspective and gauge community opinion
Meeting and presentation skills: public speaking and interacting with an older audience
Likely challenges student board members will face, and how to overcome them
Student survey tools and resources

Eligibility

This conference is primarily focused on instructing current student board members, student trustees, members of school district congresses, school boards, or advisory committees. In the past, we have also had adults from school boards attend, as well as administrators and superintendents. Any students or adults who wish to learn more about involving themselves in the community or school district are welcome to inquire.

2026-27 Fee TBD

Program Fees

Most student board members who attend these workshops are sponsored by the school board they sit on.

We encourage students who wish to attend to ask their school or ASB to help fund them, and we encourage school boards to view these workshops as an investment in developing stronger leaders and more effective communicators out of their student representatives.

For students without sponsors and concerned about cost, CASC has a limited number of partial and full need-based scholarships. Visit our Scholarships page to learn more, or access our Scholarship Application.
